Software required

In previous years, students were required to install two software programs on their computers: a programming language (Julia) and a notebook (Pluto). Because of the remarkable progress in computation in recent years, this will no longer be necessary.

Those two programs were indispensable during assessments and practical sessions. Although assessments this academic year will still require students’ computers, none of those installations will be required, because the only software “directly” used will be a browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, or Safari).

Instead, students must install a different type of software called the “Safe Exam Browser” (SEB). This software ensures assessments align with academic integrity and the Rules of Conduct of ISCTE-IUL, preventing fraud during exams and tests. This installation is mandatory and very easy to implement.

To ensure students install the correct SEB executable, click the following links for the Windows 10 and Windows 11 executables and the macOS executable.

After downloading the executable, installation is very simple. On Windows, click the executable and follow the instructions (only one instruction will be provided, and it will take around 4 minutes to install the software). On macOS, put it in the Applications folder (that is all).

This software will be required only during tests and exams. Students do not need to use this software outside those assessment moments, so do not worry about whether the installation was done correctly. Before the first assessment, the teaching team will send you a SEB file to run and check that everything works correctly and smoothly. Until then, you can’t check your installation. You need to receive a file from the teaching team first.
